ATTENTION TO ALL RANGE USERS

 

 

During the 2009 November meeting, the SSAA Para Council voted in favour of using Empty Chamber Indicators in all rifles, pistols and shotguns located at Para.

The rule will start on the 1st of January 2010. However it will have a 6 month grace period so all members and visitors can become familiar with the new rule.

 

Empty Chamber Indicators (ECI) can be purchased from the canteen or people can manufacture their own. To ensure consistency across the range, the council has decided that the Flag on all ECI will be a safety yellow colour. That way when there is a cease fire, the range officer can identify that all firearms are cleared with ease and consistency.

 

A person will not be required to use a ECI if they are holstering a pistol. However under the SSAA Para Range rules, any member can still challenge the safety of a firearm.

 

 

Examples of use

 

Bolt Actions          
The Action is open and magazine removed (if applicable), the Range Officer then checks that the magazine is removed and the action is cleared. The ECI is then inserted into the chamber by the shooter to identify that the firearm is now clear while on the bench or in the rack. 
When the range is declared open and the firearm is to be used again, the shooter is to remove the ECI and follow the RO's commands for the next detail.

Lever Actions
The Action is opened by the shooter, the Range Officer then asks the shooter to cycle the action to ensure the magazine and action are cleared. The ECI is then inserted into the chamber by the shooter to identify that the firearm is now clear while on the bench or in the rack. 
When the range is declared open and the firearm is to be used again, the shooter is to remove the ECI and follow the RO's commands for the next detail.

Break Action
The Action is opened by the shooter, the Range Officer then checks that the chamber(s) is empty and the shooter then inserts the ECI indicator into the chamber. If the action is closed so the firearm is placed in a rack, the ECI indicator is then placed in the top of the barrel. When the action is opened again, the ECI is taken from the top of the barrel and placed into the chamber. When the range is declared open and the firearm is to be used again, the shooter is to remove the ECI and follow the RO's commands for the next detail.

Muzzle Loaders
The shooter shows the RO that the chamber is clear by using a cleaning rod. Once it is declared clear the ECI is then inserted into the top of the barrel to show it has been checked and declared clear. When the range is declared open and the firearm is to be used again, the shooter is to remove the ECI and follow the RO's commands for the next detail.

Revolvers
The shooter shows the RO that the cylinder is clear. Once it is declared clear the ECI is then inserted into the barrel (from cylinder end). If the cylinder can not be opened to expose the chamber, then the ECI is to be inserted into the Loading Gate. When the range is declared open and the firearm is to be used again, the shooter is to remove the ECI and follow the RO's commands for the next detail.

Semi Auto
The Action is open and magazine removed (if applicable), the Range Officer then checks that the magazine is removed and the action is cleared. The ECI is then inserted into the chamber by the shooter to identify that the firearm is now clear while on the bench. 
When the range is declared open and the firearm is to be used again, the shooter is to remove the ECI and follow the RO's commands for the next detail.

 

Pump Actions
The Action is opened by the shooter, the Range Officer then asks the shooter to pump the action to ensure the magazine and action are cleared. The ECI is then inserted into the chamber by the shooter to identify that the firearm is now clear while on the bench or in the rack.  When the range is declared open and the firearm is to be used again, the shooter is to remove the ECI and follow the RO's commands for the next detail.
