SSAA Para holds several competitions for scoped air rile on a regular basis. There are two competitions conducted under SSAA official rules for Scoped Air Rifle. Silhouette air rifle is conducted under the international rules for silhouette air rifle.
Any air rifle using compressed air, gas, pump or spring type air rifles can be used. Air rifles of .177” (4.5mm) calibre are designated for indoors events, however .22” calibre may be used for silhouette. Any sight type, aperture, partridge or scope sight is permitted, and there is no limit on the weight of the rifle. Shooting gloves, coats, pants and rifle slings are also permitted.
As far as rifles go a new expensive rifle is not necessarily needed. There are many second-hand target and semi-target air rifles on the market if you look around. Air rifles retain their accuracy and an older second-hand rifle will shoot just as accurately as a new expensive one and be more accurate than most can shoot at 10 metres.
Some pellets shoot more accurately in some air rifles than in others. Just as you would with a rimfire or centrefire rifle, it is important to try as many different brands and weights of pellets as you can get your hands on. Don’t be afraid to experiment as there is almost and endless variety of pellet weights and style available. Benchrest testing is recommended.
Competitions are graded and a shooter moves to a higher grade when the grade level score is equalled or exceeded on three occasions. Proficiency awards are also available.
Air rifle is held Friday nights at Para Range commencing at 7.30 pm. Visitors and non-members are welcome. Juniors are welcome, but must be over the age of 10 years and accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult.
You do not need to own an air rifle to participate. Para Branch has club air rifles with scopes and pellets available. The cost is included in a small nomination fee.
