Field Rifle, 3P, Rifle Metallic Silhouette Info

Field Rifle

Field Rifle is a shoot designed around the four most used field positions, over various distances for both Rimfire and Centerfire rifles. Participation in this even will improve a hunter’s marksmanship under rifle range conditions and also teach the shooter the limitations and capabilities of their equipment.
This also provides an environment for the experimentation and development of field or hunting rifles.
Centerfire field rifles may be up to 8mm in calibre and chambered for any Centerfire factory or wildcat cartridge. A bolt-action repeater is ideal, but any type of action that is safe can be used, including bolt, lever and slide. Self-loading actions were used on a regular basis before their ban in 1997. The weight limit is 5kg including bolt, empty magazine, sights and all accessories, except a sling.
Rimfire field rifles have the same specifications as Centerfire rifles, except they must be chambered only for the .22LR Rimfire cartridge and not weigh more than 4kg including the bolt, empty magazine, sights and all accessories, except a sling. The course of fire for Rimfire and

Field Rifle is fired in the following order:
  • Rapid Fire is 12 rounds rapid fire in four bursts of three shots in each burst, to be fired from the standing unsupported position at a distance of 25m. The time allowed to fire each burst of three shots is to be 15 seconds.
  • Standing position is 10 rounds, slow fire, from the standing unsupported position at a distance of 25m for Rimfire and 50m for Centerfire.
  • Standing Post Rest is 10 rounds, slow fire, from the standing position with a post rest position at 50m for Rimfire and 100m/yards for Centerfire.
  • Sitting/Kneeling Post Rest is 10 rounds, slow fire, from the sitting or kneeling position with a post rest position at 50m for Rimfire and 200m/yards for Centerfire.
Field Rifle shot at Para is usually on Sunday mornings.

Rifle Metallic Silhouette

Rifle Metallic Silhouette is a sport in which rifles are used to knock down metal targets at a variety of distances. Rifle Metallic Silhouette usually caters for Centerfire, Rimfire and air rifle shooting, However at Para we are limited to Air Rifle (see the air rifle discipline), and Rimfire matches, and cowboy lever action matches (refer to the cowboy lever action discipline).
The targets used in this discipline are metal cut-outs in the shape of animals (chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams) and are made of varying thicknesses depending on the distances and the calibres being used.A steel stand is set into the ground and the targets placed on it. There are 10 targets at each distance in two banks of five.

In the Rimfire match
  • Chickens are placed at 40m,
  • Pigs at 60m,
  • Turkeys at 77m
  • Rams at 100m.
Matches consist of 40 shots (10 at each of the four types of targets).
All Rifle Metallic Silhouette matches are shot from the standing offhand position, with no support, not even a sling.
To score a hit, these steel animals must be knocked off their stands, they must also be shot in the correct order and within the time limit.
Rimfire Rifle Silhouette is shot on Sunday Mornings Once a month.

Contact the club or see the program for more details.

SSAA 3 Positional

SSAA 3 Positional is a sporting rifle event using the same rifles that are used in Field Rifle. The event is a slow-fire event with prone, standing and kneeling/sitting positions required to be used. Kneeling or sitting is optional for the third position. Most competitors elect to shoot the sitting position because it allows for a position with a relatively lower centre of gravity and is generally more stable. Higher scores are usually shot in the sitting position.

This is a great event for improving fine accuracy and refining shooting skills. Many field rifle shooters also shoot this 3 Positional event as the same rifles can be used. A shooting jacket and a two point rifle sling is allowed for 3 Positional and can help with improving scores. The benefit of a shooting jacket is that it helps to isolate the rifle from the heartbeat of the shooter and makes position shooting more stable and more comfortable. The course of fire is 20 shots in the 30 minutes for each position, 60 shots in total. Rimfire at 50m and centrefire at 100m is fired in the following order:
  • Prone position is where the shooter lies on the surface of the shooting station or uses a shooting mat. The rifle is supported by both hands the shoulder and usually a rifle sling, with the shooter’s forearm forming an angle that must not be less than 30 degrees.
  • Standing is where the shooter stands erect on both feet without support of any kind for either the rifle or the shooter, with no part of the body or limbs to touch the ground or any other object, except the soles of the boots/shoes.  A rifle sling may be used.
  • Sitting is where the shooter sits on the surface of the shooting station, with no part of the body or limbs touching any support or object.  In sitting position a sling is usually a hindrance and can be removed from the rifle if the shooter chooses.
  • Kneeling is where, for a right-handed shooter, the shooter touches the ground only with the sole of the left boot/shoe and the lower part of the right leg, including foot and knee. The buttocks must rest on the right foot or heel and the left elbow on the left knee. No other part of the body or limbs is to touch any support or object, except that a kneeling roll may be used under the right instep.  A rifle sling is allowed.
3P shot at Para is usually shot on Sunday mornings. Please refer to the program for the exact time and location of events.

NRA 3 Position Any Sight

The rules for NRA 3P competition are governed by the National Rifle Association of America.  There are a large number of NRA sanctioned rifle events.  SSAA has elected to participate in the what is officially called the NRA 3P Smallbore Rifle – Any Sight match.

This is the ultimate match in regard to rifles and equipment. Basically, any rifle in .22 long rifle calibre and any sight, telescopic or aperture, is allowed. Palm rests and hook buttplates are also permitted. Think of an international smallbore free rifle, put a scope on it, and you have it.

The event is now shot on the official NRA A23 target which has a generous ten ring of .89”.  A quality rifle that can be adjusted for each position and quality ammunition is needed to produce acceptable groups at 50m. This match is now included in  the  Field Rifle and 3 Positional Easter Nationals.  Results from the Nationals are used to select a shooting team to participate at Camp Perry , Ohio and in the Pacific Shooting Championships.  SSAA Australian shooting team members have been competing in this event at Camp Perry, Ohio since 2004.  NRA 3P Any Sight is also now shot  at the Pacific Regional Shooting Championships. Course of fire is 120 shots at 50m, with 40 shots prone in 40 minutes, 40 shots standing in 80 minutes and 40 shots kneeling in 60 minutes. A shorter 60 shot version of the match is often shot in Australia with the course of fire being 20 shots from each position. . If you are into rifle shooting, take the time to check these Field Rifle and 3-Positional matches out.

SSAA Para also give the opportunity for its financial members to join Target Rifle SA (TRSA) and shoot in additional competitions (interclubs, state, nationals, international events). As these matches are run under Target Rifle Australia  there is an additional fee for people who are interested in shooting these events.
